Missouri Powerball lottery winner to become a celebrity

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - The winner of half of a record $587.5 million Powerball jackpot will briefly become a national celebrity on Friday when the Missouri Lottery announces the name of the buyer at a press conference in the tiny farming town of Dearborn.

The Missouri Lottery said it would identify the winner at 11 a.m. local time at the high school in Dearborn, which had a population of 496 at the 2010 census.

The Missouri ticket, sold at a local Trex Mart gas station and convenience store about 30 miles north of Kansas City, was one of two winners announced on Wednesday night. The other was sold at a food store in Fountain Hills, Arizona, on the outskirts of Phoenix. The Arizona winner has not yet come forward.

Some states allow lottery winners to remain anonymous but Missouri requires that the winner be publicly identified to claim the prize.

Dearborn was awash with rumors on Thursday that the winner was a local man in his early 50s. No one was home when a Reuters reporter arrived at the address listed as the man's residence.

Dearborn reveled in its sudden arrival in the spotlight.

"It was a total surprise," Don Palmer, a customer at the Trex Mart convenience store, said on Thursday. "Nothing ever happens in Dearborn."

The winning numbers were 5, 16, 22, 23, 29, and the Powerball number 6.

The Missouri winner will have the choice of half of an estimated $385 million before taxes if taken in a lump sum, the Multi-State Lottery Association said.

Or, the winner can receive half of $587.5 million as an annuity in payments over three decades, the association said.

The odds of winning based on a $2 purchase were calculated at more than 175 million to one.

Choosing the Best Remodeling Contractor to Design and Build Your Outdoor Space in DFW

Designing an outdoor living area can be fun and rewarding for you and your family. Unfortunately, it can also be stressful and costly. Since we Texans get to enjoy most of the year outside, designing an outdoor living area has become a very popular item on the family wish list. There are several things you can do to prepare, so here are some Tips for Designing an Outdoor Living Area.

1. Establish a Budget

Too often families find pictures on HGTV, Houzz, or other websites and begin preparing and creating their outdoor living dreams only to find out later that their $30,000 budget was much less than the $60,000 design they found. Therefore, the first place to start is to determine your budget and whether or not you are paying upfront or financing. If you are considering financing, many times your mortgage company can help or even other financing sources.

2. Determine the Space and Accessibility of Your Outdoor Living Area

When you invest in an outdoor living area, you want to make sure you have the space for the design and build in an area that is easily accessible from the house. In other words, you don't really want to have to walk too far from your house to get to your outdoor living area or it will become an inconvenience for your family and will not be used as much. Space is also important when it comes to selecting the design. After all, if your design requires far more area than your space has available, the design of your outdoor living area will not work.

3.Make Sure Your Design Compliments Your Home Design

One of the challenges of selecting ideas for HGTV, Houzz and other websites is that it might not compliment your home. While the outdoor living area you view looks great on the Internet or in a magazine, it might not marry up with your home's look and feel nearly as well as it does with the home in the picture. Make sure the designer you choose helps you visualize what will and what will not look great for your home.

4. Be Confident You Can Keep the Landscape Around the Area Immaculate

One thing we have seen hurt the look and feel of an outdoor living area is a poor landscape surrounding it. Make sure you are building your outdoor living area in an place where you can keep the landscape looking great. Consider the location of your larger trees and shrubs and what impact they might have on the location of your outdoor living area.

Women 16-49 (and their unborn babies) at risk of multiple pollutants

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? In a new analysis of thousands of U.S. women of childbearing age, Brown University researchers found that most exceeded the median blood level for two or more of three environmental pollutants that could harm brain development of fetuses and babies: lead, mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

In a recent study, more than half of women of childbearing age had median or higher levels of at least two of three pollutants that could harm brain development. Nearly 23 percent of American women of childbearing age met or exceeded the median blood levels for all three environmental chemical pollutants -- lead, mercury, and PCBs -- tracked in an analysis of data on thousands of women by Brown University researchers. All but 17.3 percent of the women aged 16 to 49 were at or above the median blood level for one or more of these chemicals, which are passed to fetuses through the placenta and to babies through breast milk.

The study, published in advance online Nov. 15 in the journal Environmental Research, identified several risk factors associated with a higher likelihood of a median-or-higher "body burden" for two or more of these chemicals.

The three pollutants are of greatest interest because they are pervasive and persistent in the environment and can harm fetal and infant brain development, albeit in different ways, said study lead author Dr. Marcella Thompson. But scientists don't yet know much about whether co-exposure to these three chemicals is more harmful than exposure to each chemical alone. Most researchers study the health effects of exposure to an individual chemical, not two or three together.

"Our research documents the prevalence of women who are exposed to all three of these chemicals," said Thompson, who began the analysis as a doctoral student at the University of Rhode Island College of Nursing and has continued the research as a postdoctoral research associate for Brown University's Superfund Research Program with co-author Kim Boekelheide, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine. "It points out clearly the need to look at health outcomes for multiple environmental chemical co-exposures."

Most of the childbearing-age women -- 55.8 percent -- exceeded the median for two or more of the three pollutants.

Risks of exposure

Data were collected between 1999 and 2004 from 3,173 women aged 16 to 49 who participated in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The survey was designed to represent the national population of 134.5 million women of childbearing age. Because the original study also elicited a wide variety of information on health behaviors, socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, Thompson and Boekelheide were able to identify specific risk factors associated with increased odds of having higher blood levels of lead, mercury, and PCBs.

They found several statistically significant risk factors. The most prominent among them was age. As women grew older, their risk of exceeding the median blood level in two or more of these pollutants grew exponentially to the point where women aged 30 to 39 had 12 times greater risk and women aged 40 to 49 had a risk 30 times greater than those women aged 16 to 19.

Thompson said women aged 40 to 49 would be at greatest risk not only because these chemicals accumulate in the body over time, but also because these women were born in the 1950s and 1960s before most environmental protection laws were enacted.

Fish and heavy alcohol consumption also raised the risk of having higher blood levels. Women who ate fish more than once a week during the prior 30 days had 4.5 times the risk of exceeding the median in two or more of these pollutants. Women who drank heavily had a milder but still substantially elevated risk.

Fish, especially top predators like swordfish and albacore tuna, are known to accumulate high levels of mercury and PCBs, Thompson said. However, there is no known reason why they found a statistically higher association between heavy drinking and a higher body burden of pollutants.

One risk factor significantly reduced a woman's risk of having elevated blood levels of the pollutants, but it was not good news: breastfeeding. Women who had breastfed at least one child for at least a month sometime in their lives had about half the risk of exceeding the median blood level for two or more pollutants. In other words, Thompson said, women pass the pollutants that have accumulated in their bodies to their nursing infants.

Although the study did not measure whether women with higher levels of co-exposure or their children suffered ill health effects, Thompson said, the data still suggest that women should learn about their risks of co-exposure to these chemicals well before they become pregnant. A woman who plans to become pregnant in her 30s or 40s, for example, will have a high relative risk of having higher blood levels of lead, PCBs, and mercury.

"We carry a history of our environmental exposures throughout our lives," Thompson said.

How to schmooze like a pro: networking tip - Business Management ...

business people networkingNetworking is an essential part of building and sustaining a successful professional career, but it?s a skill that doesn?t come naturally to many people. When people refer to it as ?schmoozing,? it can sometimes feel downright sleazy.

It doesn?t have to be that way, though, Tom Searcy writes for Inc.com. Try these tips for classy schmoozing, courtesy of Bob Kobek of Mobius.

  • Show genuine interest. People know when you?re not being sincere, so be sure to show real interest in everyone you talk to and try to bring some substance to your conversation.
  • Include everyone. Show interest with everyone at an event?including the valet, servers and other staff?not just the people you think may be able to help your career.
  • Keep things consistent. Don?t act differently when you?re schmoozing online and offline. You?re the same person no matter how you?re interacting.
  • Stay positive. A good schmoozer doesn?t hate or complain, so keep the con??versation upbeat and complimentary.
  • Don?t drag it out. Conversations can?t go on forever, so when one has run its course just wrap it up. You can make a follow-up connection later with an email message, thank-you note or phone call.
  • Put others first. Don?t just go on about yourself or focus on your goals for the conversation. Think about your fellow conversants? interests.
  • Maintain your balance. Don?t be too loud, quiet or funny. Instead try this recipe: four parts listening, three parts appreciating, two parts laughter, and just one part wit.
  • Tell the truth. Connect with people in a sincere manner. Don?t be manipulative or falsely flattering.
  • Never stop. You can always do more and benefit from additional schmoozing.

Schmoozing isn?t necessarily a bad thing; it?s a valuable part of your networking toolkit.

Are You Looking for a Property Management Job?

Are You Looking for a Property Management Job or Waiting for a Property Management Job?

While being in ?the right place at the right time? to find a job may have some truth to it, there are also some practical actions you can take to make sure you set yourself in the right place at the right time when looking for a job. Instead of waiting for a job offer when seeking a property management position, you can actively increase your chances of getting the apartment job by improving yourself as a qualified candidate and making sure employers take notice.

No matter what stage you are at within the job process?searching for a position, in the middle of applications, or even working as a property management professional?there are a myriad of means by which you can continually educate yourself to become distinguished within the apartment industry. One of these is to become certified if you haven?t already. The IREM (Institute of Real Estate Management) and NAA (National Apartment Association) both offer three types of certification for property management professionals, and will increase your credibility when applying for a position. As an apartment job deals with a variety of fields and situations, trainings and classes in relevant work (finance, maintenance, law) enhance your skill set and set you apart within the apartment industry. Beyond these classes there are also more informal opportunities: for example a free maintenance class at Home Depot, or shadowing a property manager for a day to get a feel for the typical day of an apartment manager.

In addition to improving yourself professionally for the position of a property management professional, maximize your networking capacities to find out about opportunities and get your foot in the door. Once you have identified the management companies or properties where you would like to work, find out all you can about them and then see who you might connect with there. Apartment industry professionals can be found on Facebook, Linkedin, and other networking sites.? Search for links to potential employers, or others in the field who could give you advice.? You can even look at the previous jobs of your Linkedin contacts and see if they ever had an apartment job.? Even if you have already applied for property management positions, rather than waiting for a phone call you can continue to actively network in order to increase your chances of getting the job. Investigating all existing connections, and being persistent in forming new ones is a continual process that will give you an advantage as a property management professional.

Rather than passively waiting for a phone call or a job offer, actively improving as a candidate and networking will propel your job search forward. More than luck or being at the ?right place at the right time,? these practical steps will demonstrate to potential employers that you are or will be a successful property management professional.

Groupon Board Members Talking About Forcing ... - Business Insider

Andrew Mason's tenure as CEO of Groupon may be coming to a close.

Kara Swisher at All Things D reports, "several board members of Groupon have been seriously discussing making major leadership changes at the Chicago-based daily deals company, including bringing in a more experienced CEO to take over for co-founder Andrew Mason."

Groupon's shares have totally collapsed since the company went public.

The board is meeting this week, and management changes will be discussed, says Swisher. The board is frustrated with Mason's performance. She says that Groupon cofounder Eric Lefkofsky wants Mason to be more public, and more aggressive talking about the company's turnaround.

Swisher does hedge her report quite a bit with this, "To be clear, a move of replacing him is not likely to happen immediately, or at all."

We'll have Mason at our IGNITION conference tomorrow, so we'll find what Mason thinks of this news.

Virtualization Meets Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing and Virtualization are amongst the hottest topics in IT.

We see growing demand for Cloud and Virtualization training courses but there is often confusion between the two.

This confusion is very understandable as the latest generation of fully virtualized datacentres become a core component of both internal and external Cloud environments.?

So let?s go back to basics.

What is Vitualization?
Virtualization refers to the operation of one computer to do the job of multiple computers by sharing its resources across multiple environments. Virtual servers and virtual desktops allow you to host multiple operating systems and multiple applications locally and in remote locations.

A virtual machine appears to be a physical computer but in reality is a set of files running applications from hardware which the user need not be aware of.

Virtualization was used decades ago on some early computers as a way to increase utilisation. This remains the major benefit.? It was applied to x86 servers from 2003 and has grown at a phenomenal rate since then. The market leading technology has been from VMware.

What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is a style of computing in which scalable and elastic IT-enabled capabilities are delivered as a service using network technologies.

Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

The most compelling benefits of the cloud aren?t just cost savings. They?re the increased flexibility to optimize efficiency and best serve the needs of the business

The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbol that?s often used to represent the Internet in flowcharts and diagrams.

How are Virtualization and Cloud Computing linked?
A virtual machine may be free-standing with no network connection. This was the early manifestation of virtualization where the objective was simply to increase the utilisation of a given server.

Cloud computing can be delivered without virtualization ? using fully discrete servers.

However, in reality, the ?supply side? benefits of virtualization and the ?demand side? benefits of cloud computing? are developing hand in glove. Virtualization has become a key enabler for both Private and Public Cloud services since it provides the flexible use of hardware (and software) to efficiently deliver on demand services to multiple diverse users.

The basics of Virtualization and Cloud in 2 minutes 22 seconds!

How is Virtualization Evolving?
The vision of virtualization described by Gary Chen in an IDC paper for IBM is of a Fully Virtualized Datacenter?. He sees this dynamic datacenter as the end game as we progressively apply virtualisation to servers, storage, and networking.

?Server virtualization is a catalyst that will drive change into every part of the datacenter. Cloud, a natural extension of virtualization, also brings a completely new delivery and service model. Together, both technologies offer disruptive new benefits, but they also will impact every aspect of IT.??

?

virtualization and cloud

VMware technologies are driving in this direction. Building on the foundation of vSphere virtualization, VMware vCloud Suite abstracts, pools, and automates all IT services to deliver an elastic, easily managed Software-Defined Datacenter.

What Virtualization Training Courses are Available?
It is a challenge for IT professionals to keep up to speed with fast evolving virtualization technologies. The technology is still dominated by VMware so courses such as VMware Sphere Install, Configure, Manage remain the most popular.

However, as the scope of virtualization extends so the impact on other technologies and topics increases. At Focus we have recently launched a new zone which brings together our growing portfolio of virtualization courses. This includes Red Hat and Microsoft Virtualization courses.

Google Voice Search For iPhone Commercial: How Accurate Is It, Anyway?

Back in August, when Google announced improvements to its voice search capabilities on Android and iOS, it released a slick little commercial showing all of the answers iPhone users could now expect its Google search app to return to them with a simple touch of a button and a few vibrations of the old vocal chords:

"Watch out, Siri," the commercial seemed to subtextually say. "Here comes a voice assistant for the iPhone that will actually understand you and deliver the answers you expect it to!" (Those two functions, of course, being the two main criticisms of Siri, which many users felt overpromised and underdelivered when it was introduced with the iPhone 4S in 2011).

In the past, we at HuffPostTech have tested several Siri commercials for ourselves, recreating each scene of the advertisements here at our offices in order to test their claims in real life and cutting together a quick video to show you the results. Can Siri really call you a rock god? (No). Inform Zooey Deschanel whether or not it is raining outside? (Yes). Tell John Malkovich a joke that will make him laugh from the very bottom of his soul? (Sort of).

Having thoroughly put Siri through her paces (with mostly positive results), then, we decided to give Google's refreshed and improved voice search application, which landed in the App Store this past October, a little trial. Below, you can check out the outcome.

A few notes on filming:
- We're using an iPhone 4S, about 10 months old.
- The phone is connected to our trusty AOL office Wi-Fi.
- We only ask each question once and use the video of the first take -- when it comes to voice search, you don't want to have to repeat yourself, so we don't.
- I tried to speak with the same neutral accent as the family in the video, preparing for a vacation to Cape Cod (way to relate to the blue-collar family, Google!).
- I drank a cup of hot tea before filming, so that my voice -- which someone who works for the New York Times once called "Pavarotti-esque" -- would come in clear on the iPhone's microphone.
- Wardrobe by Kmart.

And now, without further ado: Google's Voice Search for iOS Commercial gets put to the test. Press play to find out how Google performed...

As you can see on the video, we were able to replicate all but one of the voice searches shown in Google's original ad; after filming, we tried the mechanic query several more times but were unable to bring up local listings on any of our attempts. Overall, however, Google's voice search impressed me with its speed, both in finding an answer and transcribing the words I was speaking. It's almost startling how quickly your words appear on the screen after they leave your mouth, in fact.

Now if only there were some way to access that voice search straight from the home screen, without having to open up an app. I wonder if some other phone, with some other operating system, offers that function?

You can try out Google's voice search for iPhone yourself by downloading the Google app in the App Store right here.

The Web Is A Great Place To Discover More About Home Businesses

Achieving success at a home-based business is not everyone?s fortune, but don?t let that prevent you from giving it a try. At this time you simply need a computer to create, for a really low cost, a business that you can manage from home. It won?t take much at all. You need a small dose of determination to do the research, and a high-speed, low-cost internet access. A computer-based business has a global reach with unlimited consumers, whereas a traditional business is confined to local custom and has pricey set-up expenses. Everyone in the world with internet access is a potential client.

Click here if you?d like more information.

There are many ways to get your toes wet if you?re really considering a business on the Internet. To make a start you certainly don?t need to be an IT nerd, but being familiar with using a laptop or computer would be useful. Quite often, generating an income online has nothing to do with your technical skills, but with how much you know about the things you like doing. A good example of a web business for folks who are very good at writing would be doing copy writing. Content is often in demand, so a writer could also work on a freelance basis, obtaining writing jobs from individuals who are no good at it. All you need to do is look for those individuals who have a need, such as content, and supply it for them. Write down a few samples of your work and then do a bit of promoting, and you will be in business.

Online auction web sites are another avenue from which a large number of people are making good money. You can acquire items at wholesale value and sell them at full price, or you may already have products suitable for selling online. Getting your product offers looked at by customers is taken care of for you by places like eBay and other online auction sites. Your job is firstly to figure out a price and list your product, then wait for the sales. Once the buyer makes the purchase, you will receive the payment and then complete the purchase by sending the purchaser their merchandise.

Life is getting a lot easier in lots of ways through the advances in technology. The advent of the pc has put ownership of a business within the reach of ordinary folks. The Internet has everything you need to start a business. It offers access to products you can sell as well as information that shows you how to do it. If you could identify a business model that appeals to you and apply it to your own start-up business, that would be great.

Instead of a fulltime business you could just be after another income stream, which the Internet caters for handsomely. Spend a little time on your computer seeking information on starting an online business, and you will find lots of it. Get started on your research and you could soon begin making some cash.

Forget #GivingTuesday. Want to Save the World? Send a Tweet ...

Next month marks my fifth anniversary on Twitter. I feel like I owe a lot to the humble tweet. It?s helped me find more readers for my blog. I?ve learned a lot about social media and cause marketing. I?ve even made some great friends on Twitter ? some of whom I?ve actually met.

Every tweet calls for words that are clear, direct, active and short. The practice has spilled over into my writing and blogging, to my public speaking and even to my PowerPoint slides.

Not everyone agrees that Twitter is a positive force in modern language. The actor?Ralph?Fiennes?has complained that Twitter has all but ruined language?and laments ?a world of truncated sentences.? Others like?Bill Keller have concluded that Twitter makes us forgetful?and just sound dumb.

Even if we concede that Bill and Ralph are right ? which I don?t think they are ? the situation outside of Twitter is far, far worse, and is a greater threat to the English language.

Sadly, the people I generally work with, marketing and communication professionals who should be word ninjas, and nonprofits that should be testing the limits of humanizing language, are the worse offenders.

A marketing executive said last week that a company had ?differentiated [itself] from the competition and given it an edge to communicating brand values during the holidays and amid a struggling economy.? At 146 characters, this sentence would not have survived the Twitter word grinder. Perhaps a better, clearer alternative is ?The business has stood out over the holidays because it did the right thing for people stuck in a terrible job market.? [118 characters, a better length for retweeting on Twitter].

Bloated language is similar to highly processed fast foods with their chemicals and miscellaneous animal parts: you can?t call it real food.?And like our poor food choices, these words don?t nourish, feed or fill us. They?re empty calories, and leave our readers and listeners unsatisfied.

Thankfully, Twitter is the farmer?s market of language. Selection is limited, but everything is home grown and good for you.

Twitter?s character limit keeps me focused on what I call?Famous Last Words (FLW), the one thing you want your reader to remember more than anything else. It?s just one or two sentences and there is little or no room for adjectives. Nouns and verbs do the work. And you have to play with the words to convey your meaning in the limited space. You have to cut, tighten and swap to get it right.?140 characters is a sentence?scythe.

You may think that most people don?t spend much time fixing their tweets. Think again. Twitter doesn?t give you much of a choice.

Try it for yourself. Sign up for a?Twitter account, type in a sentence or two as you would in any normal email and hit the send button. It will go nowhere because you?re over the character limit. Now go back and edit the tweet so it?s fewer than 140 characters but still says something. Congratulations, you have a FLW.

Before you hit the send button, read it one more time. What do you see? Nouns and verbs. Few or no adjectives and adverbs. Words that have Anglo-Saxon, not Latin, origin. Lastly, your tweet reflects your awareness that anyone can read it so you better not sound stupid.

Now you?re ready to send a second tweet. Don?t worry. You?ll improve quickly.

The 19th century American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson said of his writing, ?I am a rocket manufacturer.? Each of his sentences speaks to the reader independent of the sentence before or aft. Emerson would have been a natural on Twitter.

You probably won?t be, as least not to start. But soon you?ll be tweeting like a pro and writing and speaking better too. And whether it?s marketing a new product, leading a company in difficult times or inspiring people to support a cause, more rocket makers are just what the world needs.

Google Play Gets Real: Reviews Will Now Be Posted With Your ...

When you visit a review on Google Play for an app, book, song or movie, you won?t have to worry as much about whether someone is sheepishly hiding behind a computer firing off nasty words, as Google has now flipped on the switch to display your Google+ name and profile picture with all reviews you add to the store.

I?m not so sure this is the best thing in the world, 100%, as you don?t have an option to turn it off. I like the idea of inviting people to share their thoughts, and mixing in real names and pictures if chosen by the user. That way, people know what reviews they might want to trust over other ones that are anonymous and thus, perhaps shady. The company seems to be choosing quality over quantity, though.

Either way, Google is going all the way with its Plus initiative, as I?ve talked about before. Similarly, YouTube began this transition recently. This new initiative on Play is for both web and mobile reviews.

Signed out? No bueno:

Notice that it says ?Reviews are powered by Google+?, which shows how far Google has taken its social approach to all of its products. This isn?t a short-term project, this is a long-term evolution for the company. Those who are praying for it to ?fail? are ill-informed pundits, because this isn?t a Facebook competitor, it?s a shift in how Google?s products weave together. It just works. Speaking of Facebook, its own App Center relies on real identities as well, so lets call this a trend.

Apple?s App Store has a username system, which makes posting gnarly reviews almost a sport. I could see this as a way for Google to invite developers to interact with their users a bit more, rather than pay no mind to the reviews at all?as most developers do on Apple?s version. Apple?s attempts to go social failed. Ping, anyone? Google+ could liven up Google Play. Maybe. Remember, if you use Google products, you have a profile already.

Is anonymity dead on the web? Some would applaud if that were the case. I find that people who are allowed to hide behind false names and avatars are the ones that tend to be the biggest jerks for the most part. That?s not to say that everyone who enjoys anonymity is a jerk, but you get my drift. If you don?t, then read it again.

Jerks love anonymity. Nonjerks don?t mind being themselves. Google has picked a side. Too binary? We shall see. Long live accountability on the web.

Tourists trickle into violence-plagued W. Myanmar

MRAUK-U, Myanmar (AP) ? It was dusk in a corner of Myanmar recently shaken by some of the bloodiest sectarian violence in a generation, and a dozen Canadian tourists climbed to the top of a grassy hill, cameras ready to capture the sweeping view.

Moss-covered pagodas rose from foggy hilltops all along the horizon, their bell-shaped silhouettes dark against the blue sky. Birds flitted through lush treetops. A small throng of children played on a dirt road nearby.

From here, it was hard to tell anything was wrong.

Just six miles (10 kilometers) to the south, though, security forces have blocked roads to a village that was reportedly overrun last month by a frenzied mob of Rakhine Buddhists armed with swords and spears who beheaded Muslim civilians and slaughtered women and children.

Across western Myanmar's Rakhine state, the United Nations is distributing emergency supplies of food and shelter to terrified refugees who have fled burning homes. A nighttime curfew is in force in several townships, including Mrauk-U.

But none of that has kept a small but steady trickle of determined tourists from traveling here to ogle at the monuments of this region's glorious past.

"We heard the news before coming," Caroline Barbeau, a French-speaking social worker from Montreal, said of violence that has shaken the region since June, displacing 110,000 people from their homes.

But "we've had no problems," she said. "The people are very nice, very kind."

Asked what had touched her most, Barbeau turned pensive. "Their smiles."

Mrauk-U itself has been spared the bloodshed between Buddhist and Muslims that has scarred other parts of Rakhine state. It is calm, and for foreign tourists, safe. But the Muslims who once worked and traded here just a few months ago no longer dare set foot in the town, part of a worrying new pattern of segregation that has split the two communities.

What draws tourists to this remote place are its storied relics ? hundreds of them, scattered across the hilltops. Mrauk-U is the spiritual heartland of the Rakhine, the former capital of a now-defunct Buddhist kingdom that reached its height in the 16th century. The dynasty conquered a swath of mountainous territory along what is now Myanmar's western coast, waging major battles against rival empires ? including Muslims from Bengal.

Their descendants ? the Buddhist Rakhine and the Muslim Rohingya ? have been fighting and killing each other across this region in recent months.

The conflict centers around the question of nationality, scarce land, and some say, racism. The Rakhine consider the darker-skinned Muslims among them to be foreign intruders from Bangladesh, even though many have lived here for generations. The government denies the Rohingya citizenship, considering them "Bengalis." But Bangladesh does too, effectively rendering them stateless.

After three Muslim Rohingya men allegedly raped and murdered a Buddhist Rakhine woman in late May, violence rocked the state for a week in June, then again in October. In what may have been the bloodiest episode so far, a thousands-strong mob of Buddhists with spears, arrows and homemade guns overran the village Yan Thei, just south of Mrauk-U, razing most of it to the ground, according to Human Rights Watch.

Although the violence has subsided, tensions have not, and there are fears the worst is yet to come.

Which raises the question: Should any tourists be traveling here at all?

During Myanmar's half-century of military rule, which ended last year, only the most intrepid travelers made their way to places like Mrauk-U, and even then there was debate over whether traveling to the Southeast Asian country would bolster the oppressive junta.

But after the army ceded direct power last year to an elected but still military-dominated government, the new president embarked on a wave of widely praised democratic reforms, and the number of tourists skyrocketed.

The serene pace and historic legacy of places like this are a big part of the draw.

Even the route to Mrauk-U is worth the trip ? a slow, meandering boat journey up the Kaladan River past a timeless horizon of shimmering rice fields. Thatched bamboo huts rise from the water's edge on stilts. Oxen graze. Golden pagodas rise from green hills.

Philippe Grivel, a retired Frenchman traveling solo in Rakhine state, said he was afraid not of the potential for violence, but of the possibility of missing one of Myanmar's grandest historical sites.

After the fighting began, the government banned local travel agencies from taking foreign tourists to the region. But nothing has stopped individual travelers from making the journey, and special permits have been granted to some larger tour groups.

When Grivel emailed a hotel in Mrauk-U to inquire if it was possible to visit, they told him that if the authorities didn't turn him back at the airport in Sittwe, the state capital, he was free to come.

Explorateur, the Canadian tour agency that arranged Barbeau's travel and advertises three-week trips to Myanmar called "Light and Harmony," assured its clients the trip would be safe.

And it was.

"This is still a virgin country without many tourists," said another of the Canadian tourists, a francophone from Montreal who gave only her family name, Allard, because of security concerns. "It's magnificent."

The sightseers ? 12 tourists and one guide ? spent several days bicycling through Mrauk-U's quaint, crumbling streets. They visited the town market. They saw nothing disturbing.

Allard, though, was surprised to learn that one of Mrauk-U's monasteries is home to more than 700 Buddhist refugees, nine of whom had just walked there after hearing rumors that Muslims armed with Molotov cocktails were readying for an assault.

The tour group did not visit the monastery. But they did express concern over the violence. Allard called the recent bloodshed "horrible."

On the eve of their final day, the group toured Mrauk-U's most famous temple, a stone labyrinth called Shittaung. Also known as the "Temple of Victory," it was built in 1535 to commemorate King Min Bin's conquest over the 12 provinces of Muslim-dominated Bengal.

As a Burmese guide explained the temple's history, the group snapped photos of the ubiquitous stone Buddhas lined up inside its dim, maze-like hallways. Some strained their necks to gaze up at the elaborate royal artwork painted on the ceilings above.

Kyaw Zaw Tun, who works at the temple and lost a brother in the October clashes, said it would normally be full of local Buddhist pilgrims at this time of year.

But its halls are almost empty, its guest book filled with, on average, one or two foreign visitors a day.

Asked if Muslims had ever visited before the violence began, he shook his head with disgust.

Never.

"If they came in here now," he said, pausing to tighten his right hand as if it were a knife about to slice meat, "chop, chop, chop."

As he spoke, the Canadians walked out of one of the temple's stone doors, one by one. They then climbed to the top of a nearby hill beside Shittaung, pulled out bottles of mineral water, and watched the sun sink beneath the hills.

Lessons from the Tax Court: Limits under - Business Management ...

To qualify for business loss deductions, you must show that you?re engaging in the activity to generate a profit. Otherwise, the amount you can write off is limited to the amount of your income from the activity, under the ?hobby loss? rules.

That doesn?t mean you can?t deduct losses. However, if you show losses year-in and year-out for an extended period of time, the IRS is likely to become suspicious.?? ?

New case: A taxpayer managed his construction activity from an office in his home. The business was listed in the local telephone directory, but it had no bank account or online site. Because he wasn?t licensed as a general contractor, the taxpayer could not undertake large construction jobs.

The taxpayer owned a tractor, four trailers, power tools and other machinery. He charged lower rates than other contractors in the area. Most of his jobs were free projects for family members and his church. He used the same tools and machinery for these jobs as he did for paid construction projects.

Significantly, the taxpayer claimed losses for 17 years in a row.

For the three tax years in question, he reported construction activity income of $3,400, $4,000 and $13,395 and expenses of $31,757, $36,152 and $30,174, respectively.

Based on the relevant factors in this case, the Tax Court limited the deductions to the income from the construction activities. It noted that a for-profit enterprise would not repeatedly and consistently generate losses without changing its practices. (Verrett, TC Memo 2012-223)

Tip: Generally, an activity is presumed not to be a hobby if you show a profit in any three of the past five years. But the IRS can rebut this presumption through proof that the activity is actually a hobby.

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) ? The children of a Houston-area couple killed during Thursday's massive interstate wreck in Texas say this year was the family's first Thanksgiving apart.

Authorities are investigating the chain-reaction wreck that involved more than 100 vehicles, many of which were left twisted on top of each other. The wreck killed the couple and injured at least 80 other people during heavy fog along Interstate 10 near Beaumont.

Twelve people remain hospitalized in serious condition, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement Friday.

Vincent and Debbie Leggio were on their way to Louisiana for a gambling trip when their vehicle was caught in the wreck, sons V.J. and Richard Leggio told KHOU-TV.

"My parents are wonderful loving people ? all who knew them knew that," V.J. Leggio told the station. "They will be sorely missed ? sorely missed."

He said he worked with his father at the family business, Vinco Electric in Pearland, the Houston suburb where his parents lived.

"We had a good relationship," he added. "We got to spend time together golfing and fishing, and I'm so thankful for that now."

The wreck occurred southwest of Beaumont, on Texas' Gulf Coast. The heavy fog made it hard for law enforcement to determine at first how many wrecks had occurred.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a crash on the eastbound side of the highway led to other accidents in a dangerous chain reaction. There were multiple crashes on the other side of the highway as well.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Chuck Havard told KFDM-TV on Friday that investigators will work to determine whether any drivers will face charges.

Phone messages left Friday by The Associated Press for law enforcement officials weren't returned.
