e-Commerce FAQs: 8 Frequently Asked Questions About Starting An ...

e-Commerce faqsSince publishing my first e-Commerce post and also sharing the case study of how I made close to a million in sales within 3months, it?s surprisingly become a major highlight of naijapreneur.

I have been contacted by several naijapreneur readers from all corners of the world seeking for necessary guidance on how to go about starting their own e-Commerce business. I have been contacted by two major media houses in Nigeria, a radio and Newspaper for an exclusive interview.

I have been contacted by a MBA student from the University of Leeds who needed more insights about the e-Commerce trend in Nigeria. And finally, the number of search engine traffic to naijapreneur related to e-Commerce has also increased.

These are just a few of the feedbacks I have gotten, so in this unusual article, I will be answering some frequently asked questions about e-Commerce that can help you get started on the right path.

Enjoy!

?

The following questions were asked during an interview with a major Newspaper in Nigeria and I have decided to make this available to you. In case there are more questions you need me to answer, I strongly suggest you use the comment section at the end of the post to ask such question or questions and I promise to answer them in a follow-up post.

(1)?? Who can sell online?

To really answer this question, I think the first question should be; ?what can be sold online?? or ?what can one sell online?? Either of these questions will help to answer the ?who can sell online?? question.

You can sell either a service or a product online.

So if you provide any form of services to either consumers or companies, you are potentially qualified to sell online. And if you are a retailer or trader who buys and sells physical goods, you are also potentially qualified to sell online.

In other words, anyone who?s got anything of value [product/service] to offer can potentially sell online. The keyword here being ?potentially? because selling online is much more than having products/services to sell, it requires some basic skills which can only be acquired through training.

Using my business as a case study, I sell both products and services online. I sell my business development and internet marketing consulting services online and I also sell products such as; smart phones, tablets and shoes online through the fastest growing e-Commerce platform in Nigeria, Kaymu. I can do all these because I understand the dynamics of both models and have acquired the relevant skills through training.

(2)?? What is the start-up cost for selling online?

?The startup cost of selling online is quite small compared to selling offline. There are two approaches or models to selling online;

  • Creating your own e-Commerce site, or
  • Selling through other e-Commerce platforms, for example Kaymu

Your initial startup cost will be greatly influenced by the model you choose and the nature of what you sell online; product or service.

For example, if you choose to sell online through your own e-Commerce platform, the basic startup costs are;

  • Website design
  • Internet access
  • Cost of providing service/product

And if you choose to sell online through other e-Commerce platforms, the basic startup costs are;

  • Internet access
  • Cost of providing service/product

(3)?? What are the necessary things needed to sell online?

I think the answers provided above to question 2 and 3 should clearly suffice. However, let me summarize the necessary things needed to sell online;

  • Value proposition ? this can be a product/service or a combination of both
  • e-Commerce platform ? this can be your own website or selling through other websites
  • Internet access ? you can acquire your own internet modem or use a cybercaf?
  • e-Marketing skills ? you can acquire them through training or simply hire an online marketing consultant to do the job

(4)?? Where can one get it and how much does it cost?

Not to sound biased in anyway, my company provides two out of the four requirements mentioned above through our integrated internet marketing solution for smart businesses called Differentiate Online.

We can help you meet these two necessary things needed to sell online;

  • Develop your own e-Commerce platform or advice you on the most suitable alternatives to use

There are no fixed costs for either of these services, because like I have clearly mentioned above, the dynamics of selling online varies depending on the nature of business and the e-commerce model you settle for. The cost can only be estimated after a thorough evaluation of your unique business. So kindly contact us for a free consultation.

(5)?? How can one learn how to sell online?

To learn how to sell online, there are basically two approaches;

  • Trial and error ? this involves teaching yourself without the guidance of an expert, coach or mentor. Using this approach takes a lot of time, effort and wasted money.
  • Training ? this involves acquiring relevant online marketing skills through the teaching of an expert, coach or mentor. Using this approach saves you time, effort and money.

?

?

(6)?? What is the process of selling online?

The process of selling online, again depends on the model and nature of business you are involved in. There?s really no hard and fast rule or one-size-fits-all process to selling online. You have to evaluate the uniqueness of your own business and the peculiarities of your own situation through the guidance of an expert, coach or mentor. Only then, can the most suitable process be developed for you.

Do not be deceived, selling online is all about online marketing and there can be no form of marketing without a defined strategy. The process of selling online can only be defined from your online marketing strategy!

?

(7)?? What percentage of profit can I make on one sale online?

As you must have realized from my previous answers above, there are many factors to consider when it comes to selling online and because of these factors, most of which are peculiar to different businesses, the percentage of profit on one sale online is not fixed. It varies.

But having said that, here?s the very interesting part; the percentage of profit you can make from one sale online can be significantly higher than what you would make from the same sale offline. Why? Because online, the cost of providing the product/service is significantly lower than the cost of providing it offline.

So the percentage of profit you can make from one sale online, ultimately lies in your hand!

?

(8)?? How do I build my reputation in selling online and how do I market my goods?

?Again, this question is dependent on those factors I have already mentioned above. The way you would market a product is not the same way you would market a service. There are certain dynamics that must be considered while developing your online marketing strategy.

Regarding brand reputation building, the most critical factor that will determine how successful your online reputation will be is credibility. Without it, there is no way you will make any sale online. Before anyone will buy from you online, they need to know, like and trust you.

On the internet, sales are not made in an instant; sales are made by following-up on leads and getting them to know, like and trust your brand. This is why you need an effective follow-up system using content marketing.

Content Marketing means creating and sharing VALUABLE free content to attract and convert prospects into customers, and customers into repeat buyers. The type of content you share is closely related to what you sell; in other words, you?re educating people so that they know, like, and trust you enough to do business with you.

Content marketing is how you build your brand reputation online. It?s the engine that drives your entire online marketing strategy!

I was asked these 8 questions by an interviewer, so if there are any other questions you need answers to, kindly use the comment section below to ask me any question at all relating to e-Commerce.

See you in the comments!

Whitlock: Rap willingly corroding our sports

Updated?Jul 16, 2013 1:31 AM ET

?

Mike and Maurkice Pouncey, the twin brothers who both play center in the NFL, give us one more chance to examine the overall American cultural shift that is corroding the traditional symbolic values once found in sports.

The Pounceys played collegiately at Florida at the same time as Aaron Hernandez, the former Patriots tight end who stands accused of orchestrating the execution of Odin Lloyd. Mike roomed with Hernandez. It is perfectly appropriate and acceptable for the Pouncey Twins to be concerned and supportive of their yet-to-be-convicted former teammate.

The Pounceys should donate to Hernandez?s defense fund, financially support Hernandez?s child and baby?s mama, visit and/or write Hernandez while he?s incarcerated, and provide emotional support to Hernandez?s family.

Any and all of that would make perfect sense and be a way of not abandoning a dear friend in grave trouble.

Hitting a nightclub while wearing mindlessly rebellious ?Free Hernandez? baseball caps is straight from the in-your-face, shock-value, prison culture/hip hop culture playbook. It screams the Pounceys place no value on Odin Lloyd?s life. He?s just another dead N-word who got his cap peeled by a homie.

Sound familiar? Their mentality sounds consistent with the values preached in commercial rap music. Take a look at the pictures of the Pouncey Twins sporting the hats inside the nightclub. They?re decked out, blinged out and tatted out like oversized rappers.

I?m sure they?re good kids. They?re swept up in a culture they don?t fully understand and don?t fully respect its impact. The rap music industry, the record labels and the commercial artists preach a message to young black people that expressing the most unethical, intimidating, violent, divisive and classless behavior ? characteristics necessary to survive incarceration ? are success tools in America?s free society.

As the father of rap music, Dahveed Nelson, said in my column on Monday, commercial rappers are high-paid collaborators to bait black youth to act like N-words. The Pounceys have only swallowed a tiny bit of the bait. But they?ve swallowed enough to think it?s cool and appropriate to support an alleged murderer with hats that trivialize the death of a 27-year-old black man. Imagine the offense they might take if they?d stopped at a club in December and Tom Brady was wearing a free George Zimmerman hat.

(I should add that one of my Ball State teammates was accused and convicted of murder not long after our playing careers ended. He was a great guy ? smart, liked and respected by everyone on the team. No one thought to blindly publicly support his freedom. We were embarrassed for him and wondered how such a seemingly good guy could be involved in something so tragic.)

Maurkice Pouncey issued an apology on Monday via Twitter.

?I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions.?

Great apology. The Pounceys are just kids. They?ll make mistakes, and we shouldn?t overreact.

The people at the top of the rap music food chain should not be afforded such easy forgiveness. They know exactly what they?re doing. They know the dishonesty and the illogic that fuels the popular sentiment within commercial rap music industry that states the embrace of the N-word is harmless because young people have redefined it and erased its dehumanizing power.

This popular mantra is every bit as intellectually dishonest as the mantra that slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, lynching and discrimination are issues that no longer affect modern American society.

Jay-Z and the other denigration rappers and comedians love to say they?ve taken the N-word from bigots and transformed it into a word of affection and respect. It?s a lie.

The N-word was given to/slapped on black people in America 300 years ago to justify our mistreatment. It was given to define us as less than human so that mentally slave owners would have no trouble treating us as animals.

You don?t change something built to destroy you into something that uplifts you. It?s the equivalent of thinking the slop/food fed to slaves can be transformed into raw fruits and vegetables. As bad as our diet is today (and it?s a direct descendant of what we were forced to eat 300 years ago), actually what we?re trying to do with the N-word is much worse.

The N-word is human feces. It?s not meant for consumption. Jay-Z and his defenders can saut? human waste in butter and garlic for a month and it?s still gonna taste like $**t and lead to poor health.

As long as we keep cooking and serving up the N-word to each other, we?re going to remain mentally comfortable hunting and executing each other like animals and throwing on baseball caps supporting the killers.

Regardless of the user, the N-word is still doing the exact job it was intended to do in the 1700s. Hell, it?s doing a better job.

Gomez joins Fiorentina with eye on World Cup

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:09 p.m. ET July 15, 2013

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) -Mario Gomez has made it clear why he chose to leave European champion Bayern Munich for Fiorentina.

The Germany striker believes that by transferring to a smaller club he'll get more playing time and have a better chance of staying in form for next year's World Cup.

"My transfer may seem strange to some people. I had everything in Munich. But here I have the chance to play in view of the World Cup," Gomez said at his presentation Monday.

Gomez added that new Bayern coach Pep Guardiola recommended Fiorentina to him for the Tuscan club's attacking style developed last season under first-year manager Vincenzo Montella.

Gomez scored 112 goals in 172 games for Bayern across the past four seasons.

His reported transfer fee was ?20 million ($26 million).

"The arrival of a champion like Gomez confirms how strong our ownership is," said Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Prade. "It's an ownership that allows us to battle against Goliath on equal terms."

About 15,000 fans welcomed Gomez at the Stadio Franchi.

"All this enthusiasm is great, it gives me a lot of energy," Gomez said. "I feel a lot of responsibility and I want to win."

Nintendo's Famicom turns 30: a look back at the console that saved gaming

Nintendo's Famicom turns 30 a look back at the console that saved gaming

Without Nintendo's Famicom there would be no NES. And without the NES, chances are, the video game industry as we know it would never have existed. It's hard to appreciate history while you're living it, but thirty years ago today on July 15, 1983, Nintendo's Japan-only Family Computer debuted and set off a domino effect that would make video games a global, billion-dollar industry and rank Nintendo as synonymous with gaming itself. Rather than look back with the rosy tint we have for the NES' early days, Ars Technica's gone the informed route to celebrate the system's anniversary. From a condensed account of the console's origins (i.e., failed Atari distribution deal, revised prototypes, soft US launch in 1985) to a walkthrough of the silicon circuitry and hardware add-ons (like the Famicom Disk System and Modem) that only saw the light of day in Japan, the retrospective covers all the bases of gaming's golden era. There's a whole lot more Nintendo trivia packed into the retrospective (did you know the original Famicom's controllers had inbuilt mics?), so be sure to check it out and pour one out for that famous grey box.

Now on Google Earth: marijuana fields

SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS -- Venture into the virtual world of Google's satellite imagery and one can find, throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains, what appear to be very real, very large marijuana grows.

Visible to anyone with an Internet connection, the sites appear to be well-financed operations, frequently with bulldozed sites, long greenhouses and even staff. And they go to the heart of an ongoing county debate over whether suppliers of medical marijuana dispensaries should be regulated, both in remote mountain areas and in residential neighborhoods.

"If we do nothing, all of the socio-environmental issues we're currently seeing will get worse," said Supervisor Zach Friend, who has asked county staff to look into the issue as part of a suite of pot club rules the county board could weigh in September. "It's not a secret that this is an issue that needs to be addressed, and I'm hopeful that what we come up with returns neighborhoods to neighbors and environmentally sensitive areas back to nature."

It's not known whether the apparent marijuana operations depicted on Google Earth are street suppliers, sell directly to local medical marijuana dispensaries, or both. But officials say that is part of the problem -- marijuana is illegal under federal law, and while its medical use is allowed in the state, there are no standards for how the industry should be run.

LOCAL RESPONSE

Santa Cruz County sheriff's

spokesman Sgt. Patrick Dimick said local authorities can find themselves waiting for an evolving mix of local rules and court rulings before figuring how to respond to grow operations. A local licensing scheme would provide some clarity, he said.

As for whether local law enforcement would ever tap Google Earth as a resource, Dimick didn't rule it out.

"A lot goes into play as far as resources into an investigation," Dimick said. "It could stem from Google Earth, it could stem from interviews with people nearby, it could stem from search warrants for electricity bills. It goes on and on."

It is not clear if the operations are still in existence. Google uses commercial satellite imagery providers, and it can take awhile before those images make it to the Web. Pictures are typically at least six months old, and sometime several years old.

But the images also raise other issues, serving as a reminder that in the modern world, anyone's activities could be captured and recorded at any time -- even in the remote peaks of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

THE 'G' CONTROVERSY

Google did not respond to repeated attempts to reach it, but Google Earth has sparked controversy before. Local officials in one Florida city used Google Earth to check on code complaints, and officials in Greece and in Riverhead, N.Y., used it to look for unpermitted pools.

County Planning Director Kathy Previsich said Google Earth is one tool for local code compliance officers, as well. The department does not proactively look for violations, but it isn't hard to enter an address into Google.

"Certainly, when we get a complaint it's one of the ways of beginning to investigate," Previsich said.

The county board's regulation of grow operations is expected to come as part of a package of rules governing local pot dispensaries. The board is likely to require everything from minimum distances from schools to programs for low-income patients.

Medical marijuana providers have welcomed those rules, seeing them as an official stamp of approval after operating for years in a legal gray area. Ben Rice, a Santa Cruz attorney who works with several dispensaries, said grow regulations -- which would place the county on the cutting edge statewide -- are welcome as well.

"My clients are upset that there are people that are using terrible practices and ignoring sensible approaches and making it harder for everyone," said Rice, who also has called for testing pot for pesticides and other chemicals -- as a few other states have -- to protect patients and the land.

As for the legal implications of Google's accidental surveillance, Rice said he has seen law enforcement use Google Earth in court. But more often, he added, they conduct flyovers themselves rather relying on satellites.

"They don't really need them," Rice said.

Batteries not to blame for Dreamliner jet fire in London

Investigators said there was no evidence to suggest that a fire onboard a Boeing 787 Dreamliner parked at London Heathrow Airport was caused by the next-generation jet's batteries.

A team from Britain's Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) was deployed following the blaze on Friday on an Ethiopian Airlines plane, which was empty at the time.

The fire is a further blow for the jet, after Boeing temporarily withdrew all Dreamliners from service earlier this year due to concerns that batteries on board could cause fires.

However, the latest incident was not down to the batteries, said the AAIB, an agency of Britain's Department of Transport ministry.

Following Saturday's first stage of its probe, the AAIB found there was "no evidence of a direct causal relationship" between the batteries and the incident at Heathrow.

"The aircraft is currently located in a hangar at London Heathrow," the it added.

"There has been extensive heat damage in the upper portion of the rear fuselage, a complex part of the aircraft, and the initial investigation is likely to take several days," it said.

"It is clear that this heat damage is remote from the area in which the aircraft main and APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) batteries are located and at this stage there is no evidence of a direct causal relationship."

Television pictures showed burn marks on the top of the plane near the back, just in front of the vertical stabiliser.

The US Federal Aviation Administration said it had also sent an official to Britain to gather facts for its own regulatory body, the US National Transportation Safety Board.

A spokesman for Ethiopian Airlines said it was investigating the incident but had no plans to ground its fleet of four 787 Dreamliners.

"Ethiopia's Dreamliners will continue to fly," Hailu Teklehaimanot told AFP in Addis Ababa.

"The incident at Heathrow is not being treated as flight-related as the incident happened after being grounded for eight hours."

A global grounding order on the Dreamliner was issued in January after lithium-ion batteries overheated on two different jets, with one of them catching fire while the aircraft was parked.

The US aviation giant has since rolled out modifications it says will ensure the planes are safe.

Boeing's shares closed 4.7 percent lower at $101.87 in New York trading on Friday, clawing back from a dive of more than seven percent.

Heathrow, the world's busiest international passenger airport, shut down for 90 minutes following the incident, and there were still knock-on delays on Saturday.

A spokeswoman told AFP that about 40 flights had been cancelled throughout the day, largely due to aircraft being out of place, but said delays to other flights were "minimal".

In a separate incident on Friday, a Dreamliner flying from Manchester in northwest England to Florida was forced to turn back after experiencing a "technical issue" after take-off.

It was operated by Thomson Airways, which only three days earlier had become the first British airline to fly the plane.

The Dreamliner should have entered passenger service in 2008 but it was not until October 2011 that the first commercial flight was operated by Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways.

It has been marketed as a quiet, fuel-efficient aircraft carrying between 201 and 290 passengers on medium-range routes.

Why We Collaborate

The Internet as a tool allows for really brilliant people to do things that they weren't really able to do in the past. ? Jimmy Wales

"The world has over a trillion hours a year of free time to commit to shared projects," says professor Clay Shirky. But what motivates dozens, thousands, even millions of people to come together on the Internet and commit their time to a project for free? What is the key to making a successful collaboration work? In this hour, TED speakers unravel ideas behind the mystery of mass collaborations that build a better world.

GlassKap brings 3Dprinted crosshairs, macro lens to Google Glass

Todd Blatt wants to have more fun with Google Glass than just the occasional game of Battleship, and he has been crowdfunding 3D-printed GlassKap add-ons to spice things up. His newest additions to the line have us especially intrigued, though: he just unveiled a set of crosshairs (pictured above) and a macro lens (after the break). Both function as you'd expect, letting Glass wearers either live out their future soldier fantasies or snap up-close photos that they'd normally miss. The September launches for both accessories are contingent on Blatt reaching his $1,500 funding goal, although that should happen soon when it takes a $30 pledge to set aside a GlassKap. The real challenge is obtaining Glass in the first place.

iPhone 5 cases from cheap to specifics

One of the common complaints from owners of Android phones is how they don?t have the case range seen with Apple?s iPhone, although we should point out this wouldn?t include all Android phones and users. The support for creating iPhone 5 cases is clear and accessory makers always make sure they offer a diverse range of cases for the iPhone 5, 4S and 4.

Today, we wanted to feature an article created by Gizmodo that highlights a nice range of iPhone 5 cases for just about every type of owner. This list of cases delivers something for everyone, from the barely there cases that blend into the original iPhone design to those that offer extreme protection.

You see iPhone 5 cases with a natural wood finish, those ideal for multitaskers, one that is almost invisible, real cheap iPhone 5 cases and something for the fashion conscience.

iPhone-5-cases-from-cheap-to-specifics

They also feature the Otterbox Defender that in our opinion is one of the best for real protection. If you work on a construction site or in a similar environment, then you would do well to consider an Otterbox iPhone 5 case. You should also see our hands-on review with two OtterBox iPhone 5 cases for some real insight.

Do you prefer cheap iPhone 5 cases or do you need something really specific?

What if your gluten intolerance is all in your head?

For many sufferers, gluten intolerance may originate in the mind, not the body. But that's nothing to be ashamed of, says a philosopher

While living in China from 2003 to 2005, I often served as the designated translator for fellow expatriates. Whenever we ate out, this involved asking our server which menu items contained monosodium glutamate (MSG). Invariably I was told that almost everything is made with weijing ("flavour essence"), including, on one occasion, the roast peanut appetiser my MSG-sensitive friends were snacking on as I made my enquiry.

After observing that no one reacted to the peanuts, I was inspired to conduct a simple (and admittedly unethical) experiment. One evening, instead of translating honestly, I told my companions at a large banquet that the kitchen had promised to avoid using MSG. Everyone thanked me and happily ate their meal, dish after poisoned dish.

An hour later? Two hours later? The next day? Nothing.

I repeated this experiment on multiple occasions, always with the same result. And yet foreigners living in China routinely complained of reactions to their food that included headaches, chest pain and shortness of breath. Was there something about my presence that conferred temporary resistance to MSG? Or could it be that MSG sensitivity was only in their heads?

Chinese restaurant syndrome

In April 1968, the New England Journal of Medicine published a letter by Robert Ho Man Kwok that described a strange set of symptoms: "Numbness at the back of the neck, gradually radiating to both arms and the back, general weakness and palpitation." Stranger still was the fact that Kwok, himself a Chinese immigrant, typically noted the onset of these symptoms 20 minutes after eating at restaurants serving "Northern Chinese food".

An editor at the journal titled Kwok's letter "Chinese restaurant syndrome", and thus began a minor epidemic. For countless sufferers, a mystery had been finally solved. "No MSG" signs sprang up across the US, and, eventually, the world. Study upon study confirmed the syndrome's existence and speculated about the science underlying it.

But after reading some of these studies, even a layperson will start to get suspicious. Take the editorial note that precedes Russell Asnes's article "Chinese restaurant syndrome in an infant": "The evidence that this infant had the Chinese Restaurant syndrome may be only circumstantial. However, the description of the symptom is accurate as attested to by the Editor's wife who suffers from the same malady. Incidentally, she remains a devotee of Chinese cuisine."

Science, that sworn enemy of circumstantial evidence, marched on, and slowly but surely physiological explanations of Chinese restaurant syndrome began to lose credibility. Double-blinded studies failed to turn up evidence of a clinical condition. MSG, many people noted, appears in everything from sushi to Doritos. Journalists performed experiments similar to mine, their results echoing the consensus of professional scientists: in the overwhelming majority of cases, MSG sensitivity is a psychological phenomenon.

Despite this thorough debunking, a surprisingly large number of people ? generally those who lived through the epidemic ? still insist they are sensitive to MSG. Google around and you'll turn up scores of alarmist websites, which tend to combine outdated research with anecdotal, indignant rebuttals of the current scientific wisdom: "How dare you suggest my MSG sensitivity is only in my head? Why, just the other day I went out for Chinese and forgot to ask about MSG. After 45 minutes I couldn't breathe and my heart was racing."

Occasionally, as with vaccines and climate change denial, alarmism veers into paranoia, yielding accusations that a shadowy east Asian cabal is paying off scientists and journalists to regurgitate their propaganda. (Ajinomoto Corporation, I await your cheque!). For a small minority, MSG sensitivity somehow became more than a medical condition, and challenging its physiological basis poses a threat to their very identity. The harmfulness of MSG, a seemingly trivial assertion, took on the importance of a religious doctrine, a fundamental truth to be defended at any cost. But why?

Gluten rising

In 2007, my wife's cake shop did not offer a gluten-free option. Six years later, hardly a month goes by without a request for a gluten-free tasting. Thanks in part to celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga, nearly one-third of all consumers are now interested in gluten-free food, a multi-billion-dollar industry projected to exceed $10 billion by 2017. (Even children's play sand now comes with a gluten-free guarantee!)

This is very perplexing, given that only 1 per cent of the population has coeliac disease and only 0.5 per cent is allergic to wheat. What could possibly be causing widespread reports of non-coeliac gluten intolerance, commonly blamed for a raft of symptoms including gas, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, fatigue, goose bumps, dizziness, infertility, migraines, joint inflammation and even mood disorders?

Scientists are applying themselves to the riddle, and last February Slate's Darshak Sanghavi reported on an Italian study that confirmed the existence of gluten intolerance ("non-coeliac wheat sensitivity") as a third, "distinct clinical condition". In the study, one-third of patients who self-identified as gluten-intolerant did in fact experience symptom relief after adopting a gluten-free diet. Case closed, right? Pass the gluten-free pasta.

Actress Leah Remini leaves Church of Scientology

Remini's representatives would not comment on the New York Post article. Representatives for the Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The actress, 43, has spoken publicly in the past about being a member of the Church of Scientology, which was founded in 1954 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard and has attracted several Hollywood stars including Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

The organisation describes its practices as a religion and believes man is an immortal being whose experience extends beyond one lifetime.

But some observers ? including media mogul Rupert Murdoch ? liken it to an alleged cult and there have been accusations that Scientologists pressurise people who seek to quit.

The church came under fresh scrutiny last year when actress Katie Holmes suddenly divorced Cruise, with whom she has one daughter. Although there was speculation that Holmes had rejected Scientology, neither she nor Cruise addressed a split over the faith.

In an April 2001 interview with CNN, Remini said she "finds solace in her steadfast practice of Scientology," and jumped to the defense of the religion.

"If somebody is going to get turned off about something because of what they read or heard, then that person's not smart enough to even enter a church," Remini said to CNN.

Other notable former Scientology members include director Paul Haggis, who spoke out in detail about his experiences with the church in a New Yorker article in February 2011.

RockPile: Midnight Oil- Here Come the Mummies- White Buffalo Woman- Another Lost Year

Midnight Oil
Essential Oils

Columbia/Legacy

Fans of this Aussie band should really like this 2-CD compilation as it not only collects the band's many hits but also includes deep album tracks, including selections from before the band broke big stateside. The band put out four releases before they started racking up major sales and eight of the included tunes, including the twangy, Ventures-like instrumental "Wedding Cake Island" are drawn from those lesser-known efforts, Midnight Oil, Head Injuries, Bird Noises and Place Without a Postcard. The voice of singer Peter Garrett is instantly recognizable on the early tunes but the band had not yet polished their knack for setting politically-charged themes to radio-ready pop hooks. They found the formula in 1983 though and began a decade-long run of ruling radio and MTV with hits "Power and the Passion," "Best of Both Worlds," "Beds are Burning," "The Dead Heart," "Blue Sky Mine," "Forgotten Years" and "King of the Mountain," all included here. Midnight Oil's popularity started to wane around 1993 but the hits are bookended here by nine cuts from their most recent albums through 2000's The Real Thing.

Here Come the Mummies
Cryptic

Sphinxter

This band has a penchant for getting a little bit naughty with their lyrics (add a second "t" to the last word in "Everything But" and you get the idea) but they are not to be mistaken for a novelty act just because they call themselves Here Come the Mummies. Completely to the contrary, HCTM are a funk/pop band and Cryptic is packed with fun and hook-filled dance numbers; "Infinity" is done in the style of late-'70s disco pop but most of the album has a much earthier sound, often recalling something from Rick James, Parliament or the funky side of the Bee Gees.

White Buffalo Woman
The White Buffalo Woman EP

Beef and Cheese

Evan Rutledge, the singer for White Buffalo Woman, has a soulful voice that's similar to that of Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band and the four tunes on this EP, the spritely pop of "On My Own," the smoky barroom pleading of "Baby Please," the somewhat eerie, organ-enhanced rocker "Because of Your Love" and the gritty "You Will See" all sound very much like deep album tracks J. Geils at their best.

Another Lost Year
Better Days

Megaforce

This alt metal quintet has a sound that is not unlike that of Nickelback but Another Lost Year doesn't have a disliked lead singer betrothed to Avril Lavigne. That means that when people talk about the band they're doing it because of the music: driving, well-written radio rockers like "What You Deserve," "Your Last Goodbye" and standout "All That We Are." With tunes that are angst-y but not angry, ALY also sounds good toned down a bit, like on "Angels" where Kiwi songstress Lish joins Clinton Cunanan at the mic and on the acoustic guitar backed and orchestrated "Come and Gone."

PFT: Affidavit: Hernandez admitted firing fatal shots

Carlos OrtizAP

On Tuesday, limited snippets of an affidavit filed in a Florida court emerged, via the Associated Press.? And while the information published by the AP was accurate, it was hardly complete.

Albert Breer of NFL Network has passed along the entire affidavit, and it paints a much more comprehensive picture of what Ortiz said, and when and where he said it.

Basically, Ortiz said everything he knows.

As of Tuesday, June 25, Ortiz was on probation.? He showed up that day for a previously-scheduled meeting with his probation officer.? When Ortiz got there, he learned that there was another purpose for that day?s meeting.

Investigators provided Ortiz with the so-called Miranda warnings (?you have the right to remain silent . . .?), and Ortiz nevertheless agreed to speak.? Both the video and audio were recorded.

Ortiz said that he and Wallace arrived at Hernandez?s home in North Attleboro just after midnight on June 17, 2013.? Hernandez and Shayanna Jenkins weren?t home; a babysitter let Wallace and Ortiz into the home.

Ortiz saw ?a small and large handgun? in the home, and when Hernandez returned with Jenkins, Ortiz saw Hernandez ?carrying a handgun.?

The three men ? Hernandez, Ortiz, and Wallace ? left the home at 1:09 a.m., stopping once for gas and then picking up Odin Lloyd and traveling back to North Attleboro.

Ortiz told police that, on the drive back, ?he overheard Mr. Hernandez state directly to Mr. Lloyd that he was ?chilling? with people that [Hernandez] had problems with.?? Ortiz said that Hernandez and Lloyd ?made up by ?shaking hands? and added that ?it? was squashed.?

Ortiz then fell asleep.? He woke up when the vehicle stopped, and Ortiz saw the other three men ? Hernandez, Wallace, and Lloyd ? get out of the car ?to urinate.?

Ortiz then heard gunshots.

Hernandez and Wallace got back in to the car ?without Mr. Lloyd,? and the vehicle ?fled? the scene.

Because he had been asleep and stayed in the car, Ortiz didn?t know who had fired the shots, which makes Monday?s report that Wallace told Ortiz that Hernandez fired the shots now more sensible.

When the vehicle returned to Hernandez?s house, Wallace asked Ortiz to get a small gun located under the rear of the driver?s seat.? Ortiz got the gun, carried it inside, and gave it to Hernandez.

Ortiz said that he then went back to sleep.

The affidavit confirms that it was Ortiz who told police about the things Hernandez said to Lloyd in the car, but Ortiz?s version as explained in the affidavit differs from the representations made in court by prosecutor Bill McCauley during Hernandez?s arraignment.? For example, McCauley mentioned that Hernandez spoke about not being able to trust anyone, and that Hernandez wasn?t upset about Lloyd ?chilling? with people Hernandez had issues with but that Lloyd had actually said something to them that called his trustworthiness in to question.? Also, McCauley said nothing about Hernandez and Lloyd making up.

Still, if Ortiz repeats his story in court, it will be very hard to overcome the clear and complete picture it paints.? While Hernandez?s lawyers surely will try to paint Ortiz as a liar, the reality is that Hernandez specifically asked Ortiz and Wallace to come to Massachusetts from Connecticut.? As a practical matter, Hernandez is pretty much stuck with whatever Ortiz says happened, unless Hernandez and Wallace plan to offer an alternative explanation on the witness stand at trial.

Microsoft says hackings linked to report by Google researcher

BOSTON ? Microsoft said hackers have attacked some computers by exploiting a bug in Windows first disclosed two months ago by a Google researcher, who came under fire at the time for publicizing the flaw without going to the software company first.

Microsoft provided few details about the attacks. In an advisory on Tuesday, it said hackers had launched "targeted attacks," a term generally used by security experts to refer to cyberattacks on corporate or government targets, with espionage and sabotage as the motive.

Google security engineer Tavis Ormandy's disclosure in May was controversial because he posted technical information on the Web that described the bug in the Windows operating system, which some experts said could help malicious hackers launch attacks, before Microsoft had released software to fix it.

Officials with Microsoft declined to comment when asked if they believed Ormandy's disclosure of the vulnerability had led to the attacks.

Ormandy also drew attention because he lashed out in a blog posting at long-time Google rival Microsoft, saying that its security division was difficult to work with. He advised other researchers to use pseudonyms and anonymous email when communicating with the software maker.

"It leaves a slightly bad taste in the mouth to see somebody who is a Google security researcher have a pop at Microsoft," said Graham Cluley, an independent security researcher.

Ormandy could not be reached. A Google spokesman declined comment, saying that Ormandy's Windows project was personal and not related to his work for the company.

Obama claims broccoli is his favorite food

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama likes burgers, hot dogs and such, but when it came time to answer a kid journalist's question about his favorite food, broccoli was the first word that sprang from his lips.

This revelation came on Tuesday at a White House event that recognized children who won a healthy recipe contest, as part of first lady Michelle Obama's anti-obesity campaign.

Having fun with the children, Obama agreed to take two questions from the journalists among them. The first asked what was Obama's favorite food. Broccoli was the presidential reply, according to a White House aide.

This from a politician who has literally eaten his way across the country: Burgers in a Washington suburb with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev; ribs in Asheville, North Carolina; hot dogs at a basketball game in Dayton, Ohio; and a tasty pastry called a kringle in Wisconsin.

Obama's disclosure puts him starkly at odds with the culinary tastes of George H.W. Bush, who as president famously declared his dislike for broccoli.

"And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm president of the United States, and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli!" Bush said in 1990.

Steamed broccoli growers shipped thousands of pounds of broccoli to the White House in protest, and the vegetable was farmed out to homeless shelters.

Obama was clearly enjoying the spirit of the anti-obesity event, called the "Kids' State Dinner," which recognized winning recipes like "picky eater pita pizza pockets" and "sweet potato turkey sliders."

"Food can be fun. It can be healthy," Obama said. "You are setting up habits that are going to be great your entire life."

He joked that he's not much of a cook. "(In) my family, when they cooked vegetables, they were all boiled." Since then, he said, he has learned that healthy food can also taste good.

Death toll rises to 13 in Canadian derailment; railway's chief alleges train was tampered with

A runaway train filled with crude oil derailed in the town of ?Lac-M?gantic, where at least 40 buildings were destroyed when five of the train cars exploded. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

The runaway train carrying crude oil that derailed in a Quebec town, killing at least 13 people and leaving dozens of others unaccounted for, was tampered with in some way, the company's chairman claimed in an interview published Monday.

Two days after the train derailed on a curve at 1 a.m. ET Saturday in the small town of Lac-M?gantic, creating an enormous fireball that all but incinerated six city blocks, police said at a news conference Monday that they had found eight more bodies, bringing the known number of deaths to 13. About 40 people remain unaccounted for, they said.

Police gave few details at the news conference. Earlier, authorities confirmed that the 72-car train's black box data recorder has been recovered and could give some clues as to why it began to roll seven miles downhill and crash into the town.

Canadian Transport Minister?Denis Lebel said the locomotive suspected of breaking loose and causing the derailment had been inspected just the day before, on Friday, and was found to have "no defects."

"If somebody violated regulations, after the investigation is completed we will take all measures allowed by the law," Lebel said.

Ed Burkhardt, chairman of Montreal, Maine & Atlantic, the railway that operated the train, said he was certain someone tampered with the locomotive,?The Montreal Gazette reported?in an article it published Monday afternoon. The newspaper said it interviewed Burkhardt by phone from Chicago.

"We have evidence of this," he said, according to the Gazette. "But this is an item that needs further investigation. We need to talk to some people we believe to have knowledge of this."

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com

Burkhardt didn't say what evidence the company had, other than to say he didn't believe the derailment was malicious. He said the railway had launched its own internal investigation.

"I don't like hearing statements that we don't have people there," when in fact, the railway has a dozen employees in Lac-M?gantic and has been asking for a meeting with the city's government since Saturday, he told the Gazette.

Transportation Safety Board of Canada via Reuters

An aerial view of burned train cars Monday after a train derailment and explosion in Lac-M?gantic, Quebec.

Lac-M?gantic Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche said she would be meeting with representatives from the railway for a first time later in the day.

Police said Monday?that they couldn't rule out that a "third party" was responsible, adding that they had more than 100 officers involved in an active criminal investigation.

The explosion and fires also forced more than 2,000 local residents from their homes.?About 1,500 could be able to return home Tuesday, authorities said.

Much of the scene remained off limits more than two days after the derailment. Firefighters said the hot-white blaze left a scene of destruction like nothing they'd ever before encountered.

"In my 32 years in the fire business, I've never seen devastation like this," said Tim Pellerin, chief of the Rangeley, Maine, Fire Department, one of many northeastern U.S. agencies contributing to the containment effort.

"Six city blocks have been devastated, destroyed and burned," Pellerin told NBC affiliate WLBZ in Bangor, Maine. "It virtually burned the tar in the city street.

"Even the pavement burned. The streets have been turned to dirt [because] there was so much heat."

The Quebec coroner's office said the fire was so intense that some or most of the 40 people still unaccounted for could have been instantaneously vaporized, the Gazette reported. It could be years ??if ever ? before all of the victims are identified.
