OHSU receives breast cancer grant

Joe Gray of OHSU?s Knight Cancer Institute will use a $225,000 grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation to investigate novel methods of controlling and combating metastatic breast cancer.

Oregon Health & Science University will receive a $225,000 grant from the Susan G. Komen Oregon and Southwest Washington chapter for breast cancer research.

The grant goes to Joe Gray of OHSU?s Knight Cancer Institute. He will investigate novel methods of controlling and combating metastatic breast cancer.

Gray will explore how to target a tumor?s micro-environment, lessening its ability to escape treatment and how to exploit the inherent genomic instability of basal breast cancers, such as triple negative.

Komen?s investment in Oregon and Southwest Washington totals nearly $29 million, including $11.3 million for research and $17.4 million for screening, education and survivor support for women and their families.

Elizabeth Hayes covers health care for the Business Journal.

e-Commerce FAQs: 8 Frequently Asked Questions About Starting An ...

e-Commerce faqsSince publishing my first e-Commerce post and also sharing the case study of how I made close to a million in sales within 3months, it?s surprisingly become a major highlight of naijapreneur.

I have been contacted by several naijapreneur readers from all corners of the world seeking for necessary guidance on how to go about starting their own e-Commerce business. I have been contacted by two major media houses in Nigeria, a radio and Newspaper for an exclusive interview.

I have been contacted by a MBA student from the University of Leeds who needed more insights about the e-Commerce trend in Nigeria. And finally, the number of search engine traffic to naijapreneur related to e-Commerce has also increased.

These are just a few of the feedbacks I have gotten, so in this unusual article, I will be answering some frequently asked questions about e-Commerce that can help you get started on the right path.

Enjoy!

?

The following questions were asked during an interview with a major Newspaper in Nigeria and I have decided to make this available to you. In case there are more questions you need me to answer, I strongly suggest you use the comment section at the end of the post to ask such question or questions and I promise to answer them in a follow-up post.

(1)?? Who can sell online?

To really answer this question, I think the first question should be; ?what can be sold online?? or ?what can one sell online?? Either of these questions will help to answer the ?who can sell online?? question.

You can sell either a service or a product online.

So if you provide any form of services to either consumers or companies, you are potentially qualified to sell online. And if you are a retailer or trader who buys and sells physical goods, you are also potentially qualified to sell online.

In other words, anyone who?s got anything of value [product/service] to offer can potentially sell online. The keyword here being ?potentially? because selling online is much more than having products/services to sell, it requires some basic skills which can only be acquired through training.

Using my business as a case study, I sell both products and services online. I sell my business development and internet marketing consulting services online and I also sell products such as; smart phones, tablets and shoes online through the fastest growing e-Commerce platform in Nigeria, Kaymu. I can do all these because I understand the dynamics of both models and have acquired the relevant skills through training.

(2)?? What is the start-up cost for selling online?

?The startup cost of selling online is quite small compared to selling offline. There are two approaches or models to selling online;

  • Creating your own e-Commerce site, or
  • Selling through other e-Commerce platforms, for example Kaymu

Your initial startup cost will be greatly influenced by the model you choose and the nature of what you sell online; product or service.

For example, if you choose to sell online through your own e-Commerce platform, the basic startup costs are;

  • Website design
  • Internet access
  • Cost of providing service/product

And if you choose to sell online through other e-Commerce platforms, the basic startup costs are;

  • Internet access
  • Cost of providing service/product

(3)?? What are the necessary things needed to sell online?

I think the answers provided above to question 2 and 3 should clearly suffice. However, let me summarize the necessary things needed to sell online;

  • Value proposition ? this can be a product/service or a combination of both
  • e-Commerce platform ? this can be your own website or selling through other websites
  • Internet access ? you can acquire your own internet modem or use a cybercaf?
  • e-Marketing skills ? you can acquire them through training or simply hire an online marketing consultant to do the job

(4)?? Where can one get it and how much does it cost?

Not to sound biased in anyway, my company provides two out of the four requirements mentioned above through our integrated internet marketing solution for smart businesses called Differentiate Online.

We can help you meet these two necessary things needed to sell online;

  • Develop your own e-Commerce platform or advice you on the most suitable alternatives to use

There are no fixed costs for either of these services, because like I have clearly mentioned above, the dynamics of selling online varies depending on the nature of business and the e-commerce model you settle for. The cost can only be estimated after a thorough evaluation of your unique business. So kindly contact us for a free consultation.

(5)?? How can one learn how to sell online?

To learn how to sell online, there are basically two approaches;

  • Trial and error ? this involves teaching yourself without the guidance of an expert, coach or mentor. Using this approach takes a lot of time, effort and wasted money.
  • Training ? this involves acquiring relevant online marketing skills through the teaching of an expert, coach or mentor. Using this approach saves you time, effort and money.

?

?

(6)?? What is the process of selling online?

The process of selling online, again depends on the model and nature of business you are involved in. There?s really no hard and fast rule or one-size-fits-all process to selling online. You have to evaluate the uniqueness of your own business and the peculiarities of your own situation through the guidance of an expert, coach or mentor. Only then, can the most suitable process be developed for you.

Do not be deceived, selling online is all about online marketing and there can be no form of marketing without a defined strategy. The process of selling online can only be defined from your online marketing strategy!

?

(7)?? What percentage of profit can I make on one sale online?

As you must have realized from my previous answers above, there are many factors to consider when it comes to selling online and because of these factors, most of which are peculiar to different businesses, the percentage of profit on one sale online is not fixed. It varies.

But having said that, here?s the very interesting part; the percentage of profit you can make from one sale online can be significantly higher than what you would make from the same sale offline. Why? Because online, the cost of providing the product/service is significantly lower than the cost of providing it offline.

So the percentage of profit you can make from one sale online, ultimately lies in your hand!

?

(8)?? How do I build my reputation in selling online and how do I market my goods?

?Again, this question is dependent on those factors I have already mentioned above. The way you would market a product is not the same way you would market a service. There are certain dynamics that must be considered while developing your online marketing strategy.

Regarding brand reputation building, the most critical factor that will determine how successful your online reputation will be is credibility. Without it, there is no way you will make any sale online. Before anyone will buy from you online, they need to know, like and trust you.

On the internet, sales are not made in an instant; sales are made by following-up on leads and getting them to know, like and trust your brand. This is why you need an effective follow-up system using content marketing.

Content Marketing means creating and sharing VALUABLE free content to attract and convert prospects into customers, and customers into repeat buyers. The type of content you share is closely related to what you sell; in other words, you?re educating people so that they know, like, and trust you enough to do business with you.

Content marketing is how you build your brand reputation online. It?s the engine that drives your entire online marketing strategy!

I was asked these 8 questions by an interviewer, so if there are any other questions you need answers to, kindly use the comment section below to ask me any question at all relating to e-Commerce.

See you in the comments!

Whitlock: Rap willingly corroding our sports

Updated?Jul 16, 2013 1:31 AM ET

?

Mike and Maurkice Pouncey, the twin brothers who both play center in the NFL, give us one more chance to examine the overall American cultural shift that is corroding the traditional symbolic values once found in sports.

The Pounceys played collegiately at Florida at the same time as Aaron Hernandez, the former Patriots tight end who stands accused of orchestrating the execution of Odin Lloyd. Mike roomed with Hernandez. It is perfectly appropriate and acceptable for the Pouncey Twins to be concerned and supportive of their yet-to-be-convicted former teammate.

The Pounceys should donate to Hernandez?s defense fund, financially support Hernandez?s child and baby?s mama, visit and/or write Hernandez while he?s incarcerated, and provide emotional support to Hernandez?s family.

Any and all of that would make perfect sense and be a way of not abandoning a dear friend in grave trouble.

Hitting a nightclub while wearing mindlessly rebellious ?Free Hernandez? baseball caps is straight from the in-your-face, shock-value, prison culture/hip hop culture playbook. It screams the Pounceys place no value on Odin Lloyd?s life. He?s just another dead N-word who got his cap peeled by a homie.

Sound familiar? Their mentality sounds consistent with the values preached in commercial rap music. Take a look at the pictures of the Pouncey Twins sporting the hats inside the nightclub. They?re decked out, blinged out and tatted out like oversized rappers.

I?m sure they?re good kids. They?re swept up in a culture they don?t fully understand and don?t fully respect its impact. The rap music industry, the record labels and the commercial artists preach a message to young black people that expressing the most unethical, intimidating, violent, divisive and classless behavior ? characteristics necessary to survive incarceration ? are success tools in America?s free society.

As the father of rap music, Dahveed Nelson, said in my column on Monday, commercial rappers are high-paid collaborators to bait black youth to act like N-words. The Pounceys have only swallowed a tiny bit of the bait. But they?ve swallowed enough to think it?s cool and appropriate to support an alleged murderer with hats that trivialize the death of a 27-year-old black man. Imagine the offense they might take if they?d stopped at a club in December and Tom Brady was wearing a free George Zimmerman hat.

(I should add that one of my Ball State teammates was accused and convicted of murder not long after our playing careers ended. He was a great guy ? smart, liked and respected by everyone on the team. No one thought to blindly publicly support his freedom. We were embarrassed for him and wondered how such a seemingly good guy could be involved in something so tragic.)

Maurkice Pouncey issued an apology on Monday via Twitter.

?I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions.?

Great apology. The Pounceys are just kids. They?ll make mistakes, and we shouldn?t overreact.

The people at the top of the rap music food chain should not be afforded such easy forgiveness. They know exactly what they?re doing. They know the dishonesty and the illogic that fuels the popular sentiment within commercial rap music industry that states the embrace of the N-word is harmless because young people have redefined it and erased its dehumanizing power.

This popular mantra is every bit as intellectually dishonest as the mantra that slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, lynching and discrimination are issues that no longer affect modern American society.

Jay-Z and the other denigration rappers and comedians love to say they?ve taken the N-word from bigots and transformed it into a word of affection and respect. It?s a lie.

The N-word was given to/slapped on black people in America 300 years ago to justify our mistreatment. It was given to define us as less than human so that mentally slave owners would have no trouble treating us as animals.

You don?t change something built to destroy you into something that uplifts you. It?s the equivalent of thinking the slop/food fed to slaves can be transformed into raw fruits and vegetables. As bad as our diet is today (and it?s a direct descendant of what we were forced to eat 300 years ago), actually what we?re trying to do with the N-word is much worse.

The N-word is human feces. It?s not meant for consumption. Jay-Z and his defenders can saut? human waste in butter and garlic for a month and it?s still gonna taste like $**t and lead to poor health.

As long as we keep cooking and serving up the N-word to each other, we?re going to remain mentally comfortable hunting and executing each other like animals and throwing on baseball caps supporting the killers.

Regardless of the user, the N-word is still doing the exact job it was intended to do in the 1700s. Hell, it?s doing a better job.

Gomez joins Fiorentina with eye on World Cup

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:09 p.m. ET July 15, 2013

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) -Mario Gomez has made it clear why he chose to leave European champion Bayern Munich for Fiorentina.

The Germany striker believes that by transferring to a smaller club he'll get more playing time and have a better chance of staying in form for next year's World Cup.

"My transfer may seem strange to some people. I had everything in Munich. But here I have the chance to play in view of the World Cup," Gomez said at his presentation Monday.

Gomez added that new Bayern coach Pep Guardiola recommended Fiorentina to him for the Tuscan club's attacking style developed last season under first-year manager Vincenzo Montella.

Gomez scored 112 goals in 172 games for Bayern across the past four seasons.

His reported transfer fee was ?20 million ($26 million).

"The arrival of a champion like Gomez confirms how strong our ownership is," said Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Prade. "It's an ownership that allows us to battle against Goliath on equal terms."

About 15,000 fans welcomed Gomez at the Stadio Franchi.

"All this enthusiasm is great, it gives me a lot of energy," Gomez said. "I feel a lot of responsibility and I want to win."
